Rust Chelation

Products such as RustRelease, CleanRust and Rust Dissolver use a technique called chelation to remove rust from steel.

In 2006 I needed to remove the rust from an antique metal chair.  The chair has many small parts, springs and brackets that are very difficult to clean with wire wheels. I purchased:

  • 1 gallon of RustRelease
  • 1 360 gph submersible bilge pump from West Marine
  • 3 ft of plastic hose for the pump
  • 1 5-gallon plastic bucket

I poured 1/2 gallon of RustRelease into the plastic bucket, added the metal parts, and used the bilge pump to circulate the RustRelease and spray the metal parts. I examined the parts every 12 hours and moved them around in the bucket so that all sides were washed by the pump. I was surprised by the amount of splashing caused by the bilge pump, which caused the RustRelease to foam. I covered the plastic bucket and waited for three days. I did all of this in my engine room, where the temperature was about 50 degrees.

This picture was taken after the metal was painted.  You can imagine the difficulty in wire wheeling the spring.

In general the product worked quite well. It did not expose white metal, but it did remove all of the rust.

I have areas of my bilge that I can not access with a needle scaler and wire wheels. I plan to temporarily block the limber holes with plumbers putty, circulate RustRelease for a few days, and remove the RustRelease with my shopvac and paint.
